Club Venus In San Diego

The Voluptuaries Dance
Large round bodies move boldly
Across the wooden floor.
Leap, jump, extend, contract
Majestic, easy motion.
Your tall, considerable elegance
Melds to my bountiful curves.
We twine together,
Our capacity for movement enlarged
By the grandness of our bodies.
The voluptuaries dance with contained Grace.
We are not invisible,
Our folds of flesh move with us,
Shaping, imposing,
Stretching to fluid lines.
Our bodies wind together, roll apart.
Differences so apparent
As we stand side by side
Join with gentle strength
Into one graceful shape.
Music calls, we melt and blend.
We are big, tall, strong,
Enormously self-satisfied women.
Dancing women.

More and more those of us who are “curvey” “chubby” or the more politically correct “plus sized” are having to deal not only with RUDE children but even ruder adults. You know the ones that made fun of us in Gym class have now grown up and because their own personal self esteem is so low, they need to continue to pick on the “Fat Chix”

It’s time to take back that ugly 3 letter word that we all hate. “FAT” Say it with me now. Fat fAt faT FAT. See after a while it is like any other word that is repetitive. It loses its POW appeal.

But as we all know just because we are FAT doesn’t mean we aren’t healthy.

Take for example Olympian Power lifter, Cheryl Haworth. She won the bronze medal in 2000 and is 4 time National Power lifting champion for the U.S. She weighs 300+ lbs. Her 5′9″ frame is solid muscle and her victory in Olympics is a great example for teens that even though they might be deemed by society as ‘fat’ or ‘obese’ they can still accomplish anything.

We, as a community, need to BE healthy. And by being healthy both in body, mind and spirit, means accepting ourselves for the funny, smart and beautiful person that you are.

If we are healthy then we have taken back the power and the word “Fat” has no meaning other

Big Beautiful Dolls

We are all about being ‘Size Positive’ in a negative media world. It’s very refreshing that these very positive role models are available to the impressionable young girls instead of trying to grow up being a plastic barbie.

Big Beautiful Dolls can be found on their website. While they have been featured in several regional and doll-centric magazines as well as appearances on the Tom Joyner radio show, Good Morning Texas and Entertainment Tonight featuring Monique, we as the BBW/BHM community need to support this effort to get a message to our daughters, granddaughters, nieces, friends or anyone who just needs some positive reinforcement to “Celebrate your Curves”

Frustrated by the lack of finding quality gently worn clothing in the the upscale suburb of Nashville, a team of women lead by owner Sherry Lawler and her partners, Margaret Johnson and Jackie Biggers opened their own consignment store. After 6 months, they have two rooms full of gently used clothing from labels such as Jones of NY, Jessica Howard and Talbots.

Small start-ups like these not only empower our community but brings fashionable clothing at great prices to some who might not otherwise be able to afford to shop full price. It also lets those who have lost or gained weight, expand their wardrobe or clean out their closet and make a few extra dollars on the side.

If you are in the Nashville area or planning to visit, stop by Up & Down Closet.

The shop, which is open 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturdays, is at 237 E. Main St. between Kmart and Rhonda’s All About You Beauty Salon in Hendersonville.
